Finding the Courage to Follow Your Own Path
For many, the tension between personal passion and societal or familial expectations is a familiar struggle that makes it hard to follow your own path in life. In some cultures and families, the weight of expectations can feel especially heavy. Growing up in an Indian household, I experienced this firsthand. My parents, like many from their generation, equated success with academic careers – doctors, lawyers, accountants – the so-called “safe” professions. Creativity, in their view, was a hobby, not a career path.
This belief was rooted in love and practicality. Having worked hard for financial stability, my parents wanted their children to avoid the struggles they had faced. But their narrow view of success, shaped by their own experiences and limited understanding of creative career paths, didn’t account for what I was naturally good at: writing, music and art. As a result, I spent years trying to mould myself into their vision of success, pushing aside my true passions.
The Cost of Ignoring Your Authentic Self
Following a path that wasn’t my own came at a cost. The years I spent pursuing something that didn’t resonate with my authentic self left me with a sense of instability. While my peers were building stable lives and planning for their futures, I was struggling with the fallout of trying to fit into a box that wasn’t made for me. This disconnect affected areas of my life like career satisfaction, financial planning and even parenting.
However, it also taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, self-discovery and the importance of pursuing what sets your soul on fire.
If you’re wrestling with the same tension, know that it’s possible to follow your own path – without completely abandoning the love and values of those who raised you.
5 Strategies for Breaking Free and Following Your Own Path
1. Understand the Source of Expectations
Take time to reflect on where the expectations you’re struggling with come from. In my case, my parents’ insistence on academic success wasn’t about control; it was about protection. They wanted me to have a secure and stable life. Understanding this helped me see their perspective with empathy, even as I chose to follow my own path.
2. Define Success on Your Terms
Success isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Ask yourself: What does success look like to me? Is it financial stability, creative fulfilment, a balance of both? For me, success now means doing work that aligns with my passions while creating a stable future for my family. Defining your own vision of success is the first step toward claiming it.
3. Build a Bridge Between Your Passions and Practicality
One of the biggest fears for those following a non-traditional path is financial instability. To counter this, create a plan that bridges your creative passions and the practicalities of life. For example, I pursued marketing and business roles that allowed me to earn while keeping my creative spirit alive. Whether it’s freelancing, upskilling or exploring hybrid careers, look for ways to balance your dreams and responsibilities.
4. Find Your Support System
Surround yourself with people who understand and encourage your aspirations. This might mean seeking out mentors, joining creative communities or connecting with like-minded peers. Having a network that validates your choices can make all the difference when self-doubt creeps in.
5. Take Small but Consistent Steps
Change doesn’t have to be dramatic. Start small (the coaching mantra). If you’re passionate about writing, commit to writing 500 words a day. If art lights you up, carve out 30 minutes daily to create. These small actions build momentum and confidence, proving to yourself and others that your path is not only possible but viable.
Embracing Your Authentic Path
Pursuing a path that diverges from societal or familial expectations is rarely easy, but it is always worth it. Today, I look back at my journey and realise that choosing creativity over conformity wasn’t just an act of rebellion; it was an act of self-love. It’s a choice I continue to make every day – not just for myself but for my children, who I hope will grow up understanding that success comes in many forms.
If you’re at a crossroads, know this: you don’t have to choose between honouring your roots and following your dreams. It’s possible to do both and in doing so, you can build a life that’s as unique and vibrant as you are.
