When we arrive at a new year, we often think about all the things that we’re unhappy about in our career but these tend to be surface issues like money, office politics and location. What we need to do instead is dive a little deeper towards what makes us happy in our work.
Take some time to reflect on all your past jobs and pick out the best bits from each to help you begin to piece together the elements most important to you.

Craft a clear and compelling vision for your professional future. What does success look like to you? Set specific, measurable goals that align with your vision, serving as guiding stars on your journey.
It’s easy to think about wanting change in your career but you need to take some time to plan. Be prepared to carve out exactly what you want. Think beyond financial gains and more about how you want to feel in a new role.

There’s a misconception that once you’ve gained your educational qualifications and started your career that those learnings will serve you as you grow. The opposite is true. We have to continue to grow in our professional development if we’re to level up and have more options for career growth.

Forge authentic connections within your industry. Attend networking events, engage in online communities and seek out mentorship. Building a supportive professional network is integral to navigating your career transformation.
I’m not a fan of networking events as they can be overwhelming and difficult to forge genuine connections but in some industries they work particularly well. The key to successsful networking is to only connect with a handful of people that you have had a genuine connection with. Those relationships can be easily nurtured and if you’ve networked well, those new connections will help you to network even further. Don’t just go to collect business cards. Make people feel good and they’ll remember you.

If you’re looking to elevate your career in 2024, you have to be open to possibilities. You don’t have to change jobs per see, you could simply upskill into a better position in your current company. Career transformation doesn’t have to be linear, feel free to be creative.

If I only listened to myself, I’d still be in a dead-end job and unhappy. It’s only because I sought outside council from my own brain’s perspective that I was able to level-up in my marketing career and flourish in my role before I chose to retrain as a coach.
These impartial supporters will identify your blindspots and help you to challenge yourself to think bigger or in some cases more realistically towards your career elevation.

Transformation often requires stepping outside of your comfort zone. Be willing to take calculated risks that align with your goals. Whether it’s pursuing a new role, starting a side project or exploring entrepreneurship, calculated risks can lead to significant rewards.
Put simply, go for it! Keep the decision process simple. Work out the pros and cons of taking the risk and then commit to small change towards that risk. If it feels good, do more.
Never go so far out of your comfort zone that you take devastating risks like leaving your job with no savings. These must be calculated so that you can build more confidence in yourself.
8. Cultivate Resilience
Expect setbacks along the way. Building resilience is crucial to weathering the inevitable challenges accompanying a career transformation. Learn from setbacks, adjust your course if necessary and keep moving forward.
You’re unlikely to win at the first race but you have to be in it in the first place to even have a chance. So buckle up, stop complaining and decide what simple and small change you can make today towards elevating your career.
