Goal-setting and setting intentions can often be confused but the latter is a powerful practice that goes beyond outcomes which the former focuses on. It involves a deeper connection to your values and desires, allowing you to align your actions with your true self. By setting clear intentions, you can direct your energy purposefully and achieve a more fulfilling and focused life.
Intention-setting is about defining what you want to achieve and how you want to experience life. Unlike traditional goals that focus on specific outcomes, intentions are rooted in your values and the present moment. They guide your actions and decisions, helping you stay aligned with your deeper purpose.
Begin by reflecting on what truly matters to you so that you can understand how your intentions can be formed. Define your core values. What do you desire in different areas of your life, such as career, relationships, health and personal growth? Spend some time in introspection, journaling your thoughts and feelings.
Example Exercise: Values Identification
Visualisation is a powerful tool for intention-setting because you’ll be able to literally see your intentions on a regular basis. Close your eyes and imagine your ideal life. What are you doing? How do you feel? Who is with you? Visualisation helps create a vivid picture of what you want to achieve and the emotions associated with it.

Once you have a clear understanding of your values and vision you will be able to formulate your intentions. Use positive and present-tense language to express what you want to achieve and how you want to feel.
Example Intentions:
Intentions need actionable steps so that they can become a reality. Break down your intentions into specific, manageable actions. Set timelines and milestones to track your progress.
Example Action Plan:
Stay present and mindful in your daily life so that you can be more agile and focused on what matters. Regularly revisit and reflect on your intentions to ensure they remain aligned with your values and circumstances. Be flexible and open to adjusting your intentions as needed.
Example Practice: Mindfulness Meditation
Commitment is crucial for turning intentions into reality. Remind yourself daily of your intentions and the reasons behind them. Use affirmations, vision boards or journaling to reinforce your commitment as a symbolic way of viewing your commitments. I like to recommend Post-it notes because they are easy to write and you can put them everywhere!
Share your intentions with a trusted friend, mentor or coach who can provide support and hold you accountable. Regular check-ins are super helpful because they can help you stay on track and motivated.
Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Celebrating milestones boosts your motivation so that you can reinforce your commitment to your intentions.
Buddhism: The Buddha emphasised the importance of right intention as part of the Noble Eightfold Path. Right intention involves a commitment to ethical and mental self-improvement, aligning one’s thoughts and actions with compassion and wisdom.
Stoicism: Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius taught the value of intentional living. Aurelius wrote, “The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts.” This highlights the importance of cultivating intentional and virtuous thoughts that will help to shape one’s life.
Yoga Philosophy: In yoga, setting an intention (Sankalpa) before practice is a way to focus the mind and connect with one’s deeper purpose. This practice encourages mindfulness and purposeful action in both yoga and daily life.
By clarifying your values, visualising your ideal life, formulating clear intentions, creating actionable plans and staying mindful, you can direct your energy towards meaningful goals.
