The past couple of years have thrown up many questions including what your life’s purpose might be and I want this post to help guide you towards a more fulfilling life. You won’t know your reason for being in this world yet. You need more life experience, more awareness, more knowing who you are and then, maybe when you’re much older, you’ll know why you were here. In the meantime, we can put purpose into key areas of our lives in order to be happier and more content.
When we talk about your life’s purpose, it often feels like a heavy loaded question. It is. No one can truly answer that unless you’re at Gandhi or Mandela level thinking. Their purposes were very clear and they lived their lives through it. What you can do however, is look at key areas of your life and apply purpose to those. When you do this, you live your life with more intention. This then unlocks self-awareness and helps you to understand who you are today and who you want to be. Then, you are on your way to understanding what your true life’s purpose really is.
Why do you do what you do? If you want to know what your life’s purpose is, look at work first. We spend most of our time working so this is an important area of your life. Why did you take the job you’re in or start the business you own? Your why is always the most important place to start and your why can change as you grow over time. This is ok. You need to grow but at the same time, you need to check-in with yourself to ensure the reason you’re doing what you do is still strong enough to inspire and motivate you everyday.
We don’t often think about why we want certain relationships in our lives. When I work with client on their romantic relationships, if they are single, I always start with why they want a relationship. Most people struggle to answer this. The struggle comes from society’s expectations that if you’re in a relationship, you are happy and complete. The argument against this is that you, alone, are enough – which many of us struggle with. When you’re thinking about why you want to be in a relationship (and this applies to those who are already in one as well), you’re looking to answer based on your wants and needs. When you do this, you may uncover things that you can do for yourself. And then you should go and do them. Once you can give to yourself, it becomes much easier and more fulfilling to give to others.
We all say we want good health but how much effort do we really put into it? When you know why it’s important to YOU, there is a much higher chance that you will succeed. This goes for both mental and physical health. We’re quick to sign up to the latest diet, buy the Peloton, get the gym membership and do what we can. However, we tend not to look at our mental health in the same equation. If you want a thin, strong body, you know you need to eat well and train but what if you want mental resilience? What if you want to have more control over your emotions? Do you know why this will help you in your life? Answer these questions and see what you come up with. Health is about your whole existence and it’s important to carve out why it’s important that you have good health.
Most of us start our careers with a clear goal in mind when it comes to money. We want to be able to buy the big ticket items like a home, a car and frequent travel. We want the ability to buy the things we want to buy, when we want to buy them. But we don’t often have a plan that let’s us do this. We get excited by having more money, so we spend it. All the while worrying that we’ll never own our own home etc. Money plays a huge part in your life’s purpose and it’s not ugly, it’s a necessity. We live in a world where you need money (for the most part) to exist, so it’s important to know why you want to earn a certain amount and how much you want for the life you say you want.
This isn’t an obvious tip but I want to give it to you as this is an important piece of your puzzle that I would address if we were working together. Your character is who you are, how you show up in the world. Many of us start off with inherited values and then go on to live our lives without ever knowing who we truly are. Your life’s purpose is ingrained in your character, so don’t overlook it. Who are you? Who do you want to be? What do you need to do differently to get there?
Don’t overthink what your life’s purpose is. Just act on these areas first and understand your why for each important element of your life. There are many other parts of your life that will help you know yourself better but these play the strongest part.
When you know why you do what you do, are who you are, I promise you, your life will be much sweeter and much more fulfilling. So ask yourself why, today and see the beauty that you uncover.
